Professional Management of Aggression and Violence (PMAV)

Home / Training Solutions / Professional Management of Aggression and Violence (PMAV)

PMAV is the only HSE endorsed programme in the teaching of physical intervention skills in Ireland, with instructors trained to a BSc degree level. HSE Linking Service and Safety 2008 Irish National Policy stated ‘training provided to date has been a one size fits all approach. This one size fits all approach had limited relevance to the challenges encountered by staff in the practice setting’. The content of the programmes we offer, are bespoke, determined by a comprehensive Expert Training Need Analysis which play a significant role in identifying early intervention and prevention methods. The ETNA will also review incidents from a clinical, risk, organisational, health and safety perspective. Furthermore it equips staff to with a range of skills to enable them to deal with the actual experiences of aggression encounter by them and to be legally and HIQA compliant.

Expert Training Need Analysis

Given the complex professional, legal and ethical issues involved in the management of violence and aggression the following process is used to determine training design, recommended by HSE Linking Service and Safety 2008. In order to design a unique training programme for a service, a consultation process is undertaken at the cold face as a means of determining the training needs of staff groups. This includes:

Martha McGinn Training and Consultancy can draw on a vast range of resources and training modules to develop a bespoke programme based on the training needs analysis. This allows the principles of prevention of aggressive behaviour, and training in the use of physical interventions to be delivered in an appropriate context for each service. In particular we have very comprehensive training on Positive Behaviour Support and supporting people on the Autism Spectrum Disorder or those with a dual diagnosis. As an organisation we take the time and effort to understand the service requiring training and the training context is made all the more appropriate through this approach.

Example of programmes includes:

I have been working in this area for a number of years and attended numerous courses on The Management of challenging behaviours. I can state without any hesitation that the distinct approach that Martha takes in delivering this course has been a highly valued experience by our staff. The learning from the course has without doubt had a direct impact on how we now support people whose behaviour challenges
